The law on pool and spa safety

The Royal Life Saving Society of Australia reported that in 2020, 25 Australian children aged 0-4 years old drowned, with swimming pools and spas being the most common location.

Kidsafevic reports that safety barriers or fencing can be effective in reducing the risk of drowning incidents, but only if they are not faulty or comply with Australian standards. The coroner found that in 20 out of 27 drownings since 2000, fencing or barriers didn't meet the required safety standards.

In 2019, the Victorian Government introduced new laws to improve swimming pool and spa safety to stop children from drowning. As a pool or spa owner, you must make sure the pool and/or spa is registered, inspected and compliant. Notwithstanding safety, there are significant financial penalties for not doing this.
